Activity 6.3 B

Develop a theory of scale

This activity will help you to develop a Theory of Scale to test the logic and sequencing of activities, and other dependencies and assumptions you have made.

Theory of Scale

When you have completed the Scaling Bridge activity, ordering the different scale components into a Theory of Scale allows you to test the logic and sequencing of activities, and other dependencies and assumptions you have made.

Using the Theory of Change method in the Pilot stage, place your scale goal at the top. Next, add five preconditions under this goal, using the sector headings: Solution, Adoption, Ecosystem, Business Model and Finances.

Once you have done this, place the scale components in the logical sequence under each sector precondition. As a group, discuss where you feel there may be components or preconditions that are missing.

Write any preconditions on sticky notes and place them where you think they fit in the Theory of Scale diagram. When you have finalised the structure of your Theory of Scale, draw the dependency lines between the preconditions. Finally, identify any assumptions you have made.
