Background and context
The background paper plots the journey of how and why this resource was developed. It presents exploratory research on the need for practical ethical resources within the humanitarian innovation space and the findings that informed the design of each tool in the toolkit.
To properly situate the toolkit we must first understand some of the underlying concepts. The following section draws on the literature review to offer a broad outline of the history of humanitarianism and the perspectives from which it is understood. The section also introduces some of the key questions and frameworks associated with humanitarian and innovation ethics.
We hope this prompts reflection on what you consider to be the ethical challenges and tensions inherent in humanitarianism, and in the practice of humanitarian innovation, in particular – and that it can inspire and inform your use of the tools.
